Apple’s October 28 invite is here. Don’t shop the rumors yet.

The Los Angeles event has a date. The touchscreen MacBook speculation still has some growing up to do.

✳ THE QUICK SQUEEZE
  • Media invitation reporting puts Apple’s event on October 28 at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern.
  • A touchscreen MacBook and OLED iPad mini remain reported expectations, not confirmed products.
  • Compare the finished configuration, price and availability before deciding what to replace.

An Apple invitation is very good at making a perfectly adequate laptop feel suddenly old. Before that feeling turns into a shopping cart, separate the event from the wish list.

9to5Mac reports that Apple has invited media to a Los Angeles event on October 28, under the “Pro and tell” banner. Tom’s Guide says it received an invitation and gives the start time as 10 AM Pacific, or 1 PM Eastern.

That is a date to watch. It is not a specification sheet.

The exciting part is still the unconfirmed part

The reporting points toward a touchscreen MacBook Pro with an OLED display, alongside an OLED iPad mini and other Mac updates. Those are expectations attributed to reporting and rumors. We have not seen Apple confirm that product lineup in the sources reviewed for this story.

That distinction matters most when the rumored feature is the entire reason you want to upgrade. A different screen sounds tempting. Whether you would actually reach across a keyboard to touch it all day is a separate question, and an invitation cannot answer it.

Make two lists before the announcement

One list is fun: the changes you would love Apple to make. The other should be brutally ordinary: what your current machine prevents you from doing.

Perhaps your real problem is storage. Perhaps it is carrying a heavy computer on the train. Perhaps a slow export makes every deadline unpleasant. Give that problem a name before a presentation hands you a more photogenic one.

Apple’s Mac comparison page is a useful place to establish your baseline. Compare the whole configuration you would buy, including memory, storage, ports and display size. Then return after the announcement and add the published price and shipping date.

There is no prize for making a purchase decision before the specifications exist. If your current computer can comfortably get you through October 28, leave the decision open until there is something concrete to compare.

Let the invitation earn a place on your calendar. The machine still has to earn a place on your desk.
