- Duet access starts with a US waitlist for Pro and Max subscribers.
- Background work counts against the same limits as your other Claude use.
The appealing part of an AI assistant is the work you stop thinking about. The less appealing part would be opening it for an important job and discovering that its helpful morning rounds already ate into your allowance.
That is the tradeoff to understand with Claude Duet.
Anthropic announced Duet on October 21, promising an assistant that checks connected apps, prepares a morning brief and follows through on jobs while you step away. It runs on the web and in standalone phone apps. Those are the company’s claims about a research preview, not our hands-on verdict.
The waitlist comes first
The release notes identify Duet as a preview for Pro and Max. Its launch announcement narrows the starting audience to US subscribers, admitted through a waitlist. A paid account does not mean you can open it immediately.
The pitch is easy to understand if your working day consists of checking five places for the one message that matters. Whether the assistant gets that judgment right will matter more than the number of apps on its product page.

Background work still costs usage
The Duet help guide says its work draws on the same five-hour and weekly limits as Claude chats. Morning briefs and check-ins count too. There is no additional preview price, but there is no separate bottomless allowance.
The guide also says account checks happen at intervals, so an urgent item can land between them. You cannot currently watch or take over its cloud browser. Treat it as something whose output you review, rather than the only place a deadline can be noticed.
Anthropic says Duet is designed to request approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting things. Review those requests; the company acknowledges that the assistant can misread a thread or judge urgency badly.

Give it a job with edges
Our suggested first assignment is deliberately boring: collect the open questions for one meeting, with links back to the originals. You can tell whether that helped without handing over a whole workday.
Then judge the result against the real alternative: the time you would have spent doing it yourself. A longer activity log is not automatically a lighter workload.
