- Personal and work accounts have different transition schedules.
- Keep a copy of the instructions you would hate to rebuild.
The irritating part of a feature rename is rarely the name. It is discovering that the reference file you carefully uploaded no longer comes along for the ride.
Google is moving Gemini's Gems to Skills. There is a useful idea here: saved instructions that can work together inside a conversation. There is also some housekeeping for anyone who has put real effort into a Gem. Adult personal-account users should put two dates on the calendar.
November is the transition. December is the deadline.
Google’s transition guide says Gems become read-only and transition to Skills on November 17, with Gems removed from Gemini Apps on December 17. Under-18 users have a later timeline. Work and school accounts have separate schedules; do not apply the personal-account dates to a company workspace.
Supported material migrates automatically, with a 100MB file limit; oversized collections lose their largest files first. Exclusions include GitHub files, audio/video, older Office formats and archives.
The same guide lists tools Skills do not yet match, including Canvas, Deep Research and Guided Learning. Automatic migration does not mean every old workflow will behave identically.
Why Skills could be easier to live with
Skills are reusable instructions you can bring into an existing conversation and combine. A household could keep meal preferences in one Skill and a preferred shopping-list format in another, rather than building a separate assistant for every combination. That is an example of the idea, not a tested integration.
Google's help describes invoking a Skill with a slash, or an @ shortcut where that update is available. Relevant active Skills may also be used automatically. You can control an individual Skill's automatic use from Customize, then Skills.
Skills in chat do not require a paid Google AI subscription, according to that help page, but do require sign-in and Keep Activity enabled. That is worth knowing before spending an evening trying to reproduce a setup your account cannot currently use.
Back up the parts you would hate to rebuild
Our advice is to start with one Gem, the one you would actually miss. Copy its instructions into a document you control. Download its reference files. Make a short note of the tools it needs and the kind of answer it is supposed to produce.
Once the Skill appears, open the attachments rather than trusting the familiar name. Try a small task whose answer you already know. Look for missing context, strange formatting and instructions that used to depend on a tool that has not carried over.
This is also a decent opportunity to delete the elaborate instruction you added six months ago and never used. Keep the useful parts; a migration does not need to become a renovation.
Rollout language deserves a close read
Google's October 13 update said the Gemini-app rollout was underway, with completion expected by mid-November. It delayed the Workspace-app rollout pending a revised schedule. That is a plan, not confirmation that every account already has the feature.
The original announcement also describes separate Workspace timing and a current lack of syncing between Gemini and Workspace Skills. If you use both, check both.
The new flexibility may be welcome. A local copy of the instructions you worked hard on is welcome right now. Our digital-reset guide has a simple way to keep that sort of maintenance from taking over the week.
