- Game Catalog access requires Extra or Premium.
- Check regional availability and the claim window before planning your weekend.
Nothing drains the enthusiasm out of “we should play this tonight” quite like discovering that everyone owns a different version of the same subscription.
October's PlayStation Plus announcements give you two separate lists to check: Monthly Games and Game Catalog additions. They are not interchangeable. Start with your membership tier, then find the kind of evening you want.
This is a guide to the announced selection, not a set of hands-on reviews. The useful question is which game fits your plans, rather than which one has the longest bullet list.
A solo story or a four-person group chat?
The October Game Catalog update puts Mafia: The Old Country on PS5, Mycopunk on PS5, and Horizon Forbidden West back in the catalog on PS5 and PS4. These additions began October 20 for Extra and Premium members, subject to regional availability.
Mafia's single-player crime story in 1900s Sicily is the line to inspect if you want an evening built around a narrative. Mycopunk is the more natural starting point for a group: PlayStation describes mission-based, four-player co-op with customizable weapons and upgrades. Horizon's appearance is a catalog return, not a newly released game.
Those descriptions suggest different moods; they do not tell us which will become your favorite. If the group chat is the reason you are playing, agree on the actual download before everyone spends the evening installing a different thing.
The Monthly Games have their own deadline
The separate October Monthly Games selection is F1 25 on PS5, Hunt: Showdown 1896 on PS5, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 on PS5 and PS4. PlayStation gives a claim window of October 6 through November 2.
That deadline is easy to miss when the newer catalog announcement takes over the feed. If one of those is the game you were looking for, check it before the claim period closes.
“Included with a paid subscription” is also a better description than “free to own.” A membership benefit and an outright purchase come with different expectations. The headline should not blur them.
Read the tier before reading the hype
PlayStation’s benefits guide places Monthly Games in Essential, Extra and Premium. The Game Catalog belongs to Extra and Premium; the Classics Catalog and game trials belong to Premium.
That is the small distinction behind a large amount of confusion. Being a PlayStation Plus subscriber does not mean every game in every Plus announcement is available on your plan.
We would choose the game first, then examine whether changing a subscription makes sense for that specific plan. Upgrading because a list looks busy is a good way to acquire more possibilities than actual evenings to use them.
And if nobody can agree, narrow the decision to one session. You are choosing tonight's game, not writing a manifesto about the best genre. Getting four people into the same lobby is already an achievement.
For a different kind of achievement news, Steam’s new beta is changing how completion is tracked.
