The haunted house is on sale. So is the abandoned hospital. Suddenly your cart contains six ways to spend an evening in the dark, and your actual plan is still to replay a game you already own.
Steam Scream V is on Valve’s calendar for October 26 through November 2, 2026. It is a good excuse to find one horror game you genuinely want to play. It is a less convincing reason to acquire an entire haunted neighborhood.
The event is bigger than the discount rack
Valve’s festival brief focuses on horror and games built around Halloween. It includes ways to browse demos and upcoming releases alongside discounted games. That makes it a discovery event, too; appearing in the festival doesn't automatically mean a game has a price cut.
There is no need to invent a “best deals” list before the prices are visible. Start with three names instead. One game you've wanted for months, one shorter experience you could finish, and one unfamiliar thing with a demo. That's our shopping suggestion, not a ranking or a list of confirmed sale participants.
If a demo is available, let it answer a real question. Can you read the text from where you sit? Do the controls feel comfortable? Is the tension enjoyable, or are you already wishing you were doing something else? A trailer can't make those decisions for you.

Know the exit before buying
Steam’s standard refund policy covers games requested within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours played. Valve also considers requests outside those limits, but that is not a promise of approval. Refunds are protection against a bad purchase, not a substitute for renting a pile of games.
Check the edition, system requirements and any platform compatibility notes before checkout. If you play on a handheld, our five questions before buying one also offer a useful reminder: your real library and habits matter more than a tempting specification sheet.
Then give the game you buy an actual slot in your evening. Turn the lights down, put the other tabs away, and let it have your attention. The scariest thing in your library shouldn't be the number of games you've never opened.
