WhatsApp’s best new feature is for people who don’t use WhatsApp.

Guests can join a call from a computer browser without an account. Someone still has to host—and approve them.

The meeting before the meeting is choosing the app. One person has an account, another needs an update, and someone has clicked a download button when they only wanted to say hello.

WhatsApp's October 14 guest-calling announcement tackles that small, stubborn problem. The person outside the group chat finally gets a way in.

The guest gets a door, not another inbox

The guest-calling announcement describes a simple arrival: open the link, enter a name, and wait for the host to admit you. Calls can include up to 32 people. WhatsApp says they are free, end-to-end encrypted and have no time limit.

Guests can share a screen, react and raise a hand. They cannot send messages, directly add more participants or see other participants' phone numbers. The host can remove a guest.

That feels like a sensible boundary for the person invited to one conversation. They need to get into the room. They do not necessarily want to join the building.

A useful idea for awkward little calls

Consider helping a relative find a setting on a computer. Being able to share a screen matters more than persuading them to create the same messaging account you use. A club meeting with one occasional visitor has a similar problem.

Those are examples of where the feature could help, not calls we have run. The attraction is the reduced setup. The experience still depends on the browser, connection, permissions and whether the expected feature has reached the host's account.

Share the invitation with the intended guests and admit the names you expect. A forwarded link should not become an automatic invitation to everyone who receives it.

This follows a bigger move into the browser

WhatsApp announced audio and video calling on the web in July, alongside screen sharing, reactions and call history. That earlier update also described transfers of active group calls between devices. Guest access builds on the browser becoming a place to make a call, rather than merely read messages.

There are still limits worth keeping in view. The announced guest route is a computer browser; do not assume every mobile browser works the same way. And the Google and Outlook calendar integrations mentioned in the October post are planned for later this year, not features we can promise today.

This is not evidence that WhatsApp replaces every workplace meeting system. The announcement does not settle enterprise administration, recording policies or other requirements an organization may have.

For an ordinary conversation, though, a good invitation link can be the whole improvement. Less preparation, fewer account negotiations, more time for the person you were trying to reach.

If the rest of your phone feels overcommitted, our guide to keeping fewer apps starts with the ones that actually earn their place.
