- The new Search features are listed for Experimental channels, not every Windows 11 installation.
- Phone actions require a supported Android phone through Phone Link; iPhone support is planned for early 2027.
The most convincing desktop shortcut is often the one that removes a small interruption. You want to find the right file or send a quick message, then get back to whatever you were doing.
Microsoft’s October 30 Windows Insider announcement gives Search more of those small jobs. Results can include file previews and details, filters and controls for settings such as brightness. The phone actions are the part to read closely before looking for them on your own PC.
The phone shortcut has a phone requirement
Microsoft says a supported Android phone connected through Phone Link can supply call, text and Do Not Disturb actions. It plans iPhone support for early 2027. An iPhone already paired with your PC does not make that future Search feature available now.
The appeal is straightforward: fewer places to open for a small task. Our suggested check, if the preview reaches you, is equally ordinary. Can you tell which contact an action targets, which device will perform it and what happens when you press the button? A shorter path is only useful if the destination stays clear.
We have not tried these builds, so this is not a verdict on how accurately Search finds a contact or how reliably a message sends.
Microsoft’s official preview illustration shows phone actions through Phone Link. The full three-panel image is retained; actual access depends on the device and rollout.
Experimental means the channel matters
The announcement covers several Windows builds, but its Search section specifically names Experimental and Experimental (26H1). That distinction can disappear in a headline about a Windows update. Microsoft’s original October 7 preview also identifies English as the initial supported language and distinguishes this experience from searching inside the Start menu.
The 26340.9843 release notes describe a gradual rollout. Being on the relevant build does not mean every feature appears immediately. Microsoft also cautions that preview features can change or never reach a general release. We would not move an everyday work PC to an experimental build just for this shortcut.
Keep the results you actually want
Microsoft documents switches for web and Store app results under Settings > Privacy & security > Search. Our preference would be to start with the things you regularly look for, then judge whether the added material helps. A richer results panel should make the right item easier to choose, not turn a filename search into another feed.
The same build notes separately preview Quick settings inside Xbox mode’s Gaming Task View. That is a convenience change, not a claim that games run faster.
