FRESH FROM THE INTERNET.STAY CURIOUS. STAY A LITTLE WEIRD. ✳

That little e-paper dashboard needs a software plan before it needs a shelf.

Seeed’s TRMNL kit is getting fresh attention. The useful buying question is who runs the dashboard: you, a hosted service, or your existing smart-home setup.

✳ THE QUICK SQUEEZE
  • This is an existing DIY kit, not a newly announced finished gadget.
  • The hosted TRMNL license is separate; self-hosting has different responsibilities.

A small screen that shows the next appointment without inviting you into six other apps has an obvious appeal. The less obvious part is deciding what keeps that screen useful after the first weekend.

Ars Technica’s November 2 hands-on report brought Seeed’s TRMNL kit back to our attention. This is an established product: Seeed’s original launch post dates from 2025. We have checked the current documentation, not assembled or tested a unit ourselves.

Pick the software before the hardware

The 7.5-inch DIY kit combines an 800 × 480 monochrome display, controller board, rechargeable battery and extension cable. The listing showed $44.90 when checked November 2. Treat that as the displayed hardware price, not a delivered total in every country.

TRMNL’s hosted-service license is a separate $50 one-time purchase for one device. Hardware plus that license comes to $94.90 by our calculation, before delivery, taxes or an enclosure. The 14-day trial page specifies a refundable $1 hold; it is not a no-card trial.

You can instead run your own server without buying that license. TRMNL’s self-hosting documentation identifies Terminus as its main implementation and explicitly says these options are not intended to match every hosted feature. That makes checking your particular calendar or dashboard workflow more useful than counting plugins.

Seeed also documents Home Assistant through ESPHome and Arduino support. Those are alternative project routes, not a promise that one setup automatically includes everything from every ecosystem.

The case and the maintenance belong in the budget

Seeed’s launch post says the kit does not include an enclosure and links printable reference designs. The polished finished units in its photographs should not be mistaken for the contents of the box.

Its wiki’s battery estimate is up to three months with six-hour refresh intervals in deep sleep. That is a manufacturer claim under a particular schedule, not our measured result. A display you want refreshed frequently deserves a different expectation.

Start by writing down one thing this screen would save you opening your phone to check. Then read the setup guide for that exact job. If maintaining the display sounds enjoyable, this could be a satisfying project. If it sounds like another chore, the parts price has not answered your buying question.
