If the same dog, character or product keeps appearing in your image prompts, uploading its picture again becomes a small but persistent chore. ChatGPT’s new saved references offer a useful shortcut.
OpenAI’s November 4 release notes introduce Images 2.6, reusable reference photos and GIF creation that is still rolling out. The current help page says to upload a photo, ask to save it as a reference, and give it a name. In a later chat, type @ followed by that name.
A saved reference is a starting point
Our suggestion is to try one repeatable task first: use a reference for a character, change the setting, then inspect the details that should stay the same. OpenAI says consistency across edits is improved; that is not a guarantee that every face, label or outfit will survive unchanged.
The help page lists Images on web, iOS and Android across all tiers. It separately lists Images with thinking for Plus, Pro and Business, with Enterprise and Edu still to come. General image access and access to that option are different checks. Regional access and workspace settings should be checked in your own account; we have not tested an account-by-account rollout.
GIF creation does not mean every GIF is editable
You can ask for a looping animation or animate an uploaded still. OpenAI says you can revise a GIF ChatGPT created, adjust playback speed, save it or share it. But ChatGPT cannot edit an animated GIF you upload. That distinction matters if your starting point is an existing animation rather than a still picture.
The speed claim needs a stopwatch
The launch announcement claims image generation is 50% faster. We have not benchmarked it. The same post names Flare and Sunburst as separate API models; their developer controls should not be read as a list of buttons every ChatGPT user receives.
